“The narratives of the past 50 years will stay with us until it’s undeniably obvious that they are outdated. That will mean that at some not too distant date in the future we will have to undergo a sort of cultural triage – Choosing what things to save and maintain and choosing what to jettison because it no longer makes economic, energetic, or ecological sense. We need to meet the future halfway – a COMPROMISE.”Nate Hagens

In today’s repost, Hagens presents COMPROMISE as his eighth of 12 Interventions combined with his eighth Wild Idea: “A Cultural Triage” Meet the future halfway — COMPROMISE

Below is my transcript of Hagens’ eighth Intervention and accompanying Wild Idea, which I have titled: “COMPROMISE: Eighth Intervention and (Wild Idea)”. As usual, I include in this repost an embedded video of Hagens’ almost 3-hour talk, packaged in 33 myths, which features a synopsis of key ideas from his past written works and videos. And at the bottom of the repost is a list of Hagens’ 33 myths, plus two others – Introduction and Interventions.

TRANSCRIPT of “COMPROMISE: Eighth Intervention and (Wild Idea)” (a short 1:10-minutes long, starting at the 2:37:47 mark, ending at 2:38:57)

COMPROMISE  [Eighth Intervention and (Wild Idea)]

The narratives of the past 50 years will stay with us until it’s undeniably obvious that they are outdated. That will mean that at some not too distant date in the future we will have to undergo a sort of cultural triage – Choosing what things to save and maintain and choosing what to jettison because it no longer makes economic, energetic, or ecological sense.

We need to meet the future halfway – a COMPROMISE.

On this topic I can’t very well suggest triaging NASCAR or Miami, so I’ll suggest something more benign and more believable.

The single largest irrigated crop in the United States is – you guessed it – lawns. In addition to a waste of water, productive soil and a source of toxic chemicals, it’s also a fake ecology relative to what came before and after it. Some of us are already revamping our lawns to be more like native ecosystems. Who knows, perhaps it could be a trend.

We need to meet the future halfway. This is going to require a lot of really tough choices: this one, not so tough.

Be creative. Get started.

The myths can be watched in any order, but the order they’re in made the most sense to Hagens. To go directly to the beginning of any numbered myth or to the opening Introduction and closing Interventions and Wild Ideas, just click on the linked time stamp.
