“How do you sleep at night? Have you no conscience? Shame on you?” Watch video of Lascaris repeatedly rebuking Marc Garneau.

[Addressing Garneau] – “You have not done anything to vindicate the rights of a Canadian doctor, sir, who was shot by Israeli snipers. Three weeks later you entered into a free-trade agreement with Israel – three weeks later, sir. How do you sleep at night. They are shooting children, embedded journalists, disabled persons at the border, and people are simply trying to exercise their right under the United Nations laws to return to their homeland. That’s it. That’s their crime. They’re refugees trying to return home and they’re being shot dead at the border. And you are lavishing support upon this regime, sir.” —Dimitri Lascaris
The above passage is an excerpt from my transcript of Dimitri’s disruption of Marc Garneau’s speech today in Montreal. The full transcript appears below.
Below is my repost of Dimitri Lascaris’ video and accompanying account of his participation, with fellow activist Yves Engler, in their disruption of a speech by Liberal Transport Minister, Marc Garneau. I have added to Dimitri’s story my transcript of his public rebuke of Garneau for his support of the Israel’s ongoing human rights abuses against Palestinians and an IDF sniper’s deliberate wounding of a Canadian doctor.
I begin my repost with the short, embedded video of Dimitri’s reprimand of Garneau, followed by my transcript of the rebuke, and closing with Lascaris’ complaints against the Minister.

Mr. Garneau, last May Israeli soldiers shot a Canadian doctor, Tarek Loubani. They shot him twice. [In response to repeated shouts to sit down, Dimitri, defiantly responded “I don’t care” and continued his verbal protest]. You [Garneau] don’t care about human rights. You think human rights are less important than a discussion about what’s happening to the transport industry in this … [interruption from audience] … I don’t care. You [Garneau] have not done anything to vindicate the rights of a Canadian doctor, sir, who was shot by Israeli snipers. And you are lavishing support upon this regime, sir. It is absolutely disgraceful. Have you no conscience? Do you not care about Palestinian life? Are they valueless to you? Tell us, sir? Answer, please. Isn’t that more important than your transport mission today, sir? Human life, innocents being massacred. Shame on you. Shame on the Liberal government. Shame on you.
Minister Marc Garneau has never missed an opportunity to lavish support on Israel, a serial human rights abuser.
In 2014, when Minister Garneau was the foreign affairs critic for Canada’s Liberal Party, he joined Canada’s radically neoconservative Foreign Minister John Baird in a pro-Israel rally while the Israeli military rained bombs down Gaza, which Norman Finkelstein has aptly described as the “world’s largest concentration camp.”
Ultimately, Israel’s 2014 assault on Gaza resulted in the deaths of over 550 Palestinian children.
During its 2014 assault on Gaza, Israel repeatedly attacked United Nations schools whose coordinates had been provided to the Israeli military, prompting the then-Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, to denounce Israel for committing “a moral outrage and a criminal act.”
In 2018, Minister Garneau concluded a new air transport agreement with Israel which greatly increased commercial airline traffic between the states. At the time, Minister Garneau stated “Canada is a true friend of the State of Israel and we are grateful for their deep support.” Four months later, a sniper of Canada’s “true friend” gunned down Canadian doctor Tarek Loubani as he led a team of medics who were tending to victims of Israel’s carnage in the Great March of Return.
As pro-apartheid lobby group B’nai Brith Canada has highlighted, Minister Garneau has been to the “Middle East’s only democracy” four times. On his last visit, he toured an Israeli drone factory and then told the world how much Israel’s drone technology impressed him.
A few months later, and as reported by Israeli newspaper Haaretz, a secret Israeli report confirmed that an armed Israeli drone had murdered four Palestinian children playing on a Gaza beach in the 2014 assault on Gaza. (Two of those children appear in this photograph.)
For these and other reasons, I encourage all Canadians who care about human rights to let Minister Garneau know how they feel about Israel’s abominable regime.
