Going after Ford, Leadnow.ca email, April 28, 2018

Dear Supporter,

This is our most ambitious campaign in years: go after Doug Ford and the far-right faction of the Conservative party in their local, tight battleground ridings.

The electoral math tells us we can have impact in the ridings where the most dangerous candidates are running. Our values tell us we have to draw a firm line against what these Conservative candidates stand for.

What we don’t know is whether or not you’re on board. And to pull off a campaign like this, we need to know that the community’s behind it.

Tell us: should we go after Doug Ford in his own riding, along with a handful of radical Conservatives whose politics drag Ontario backwards?  [Click here to STOP FORD.]

On Monday I’m sitting down with the team to review the results and get to work — so you have less than 48 hours to have your say.

Together we can help prevent a Ford-led majority, while going after the worst of the worst. But we really need to hear from you now.

[LEADNOW’S PLAN TO DEFEAT DOUG FORD]

Dear Supporter,

School and hospitals plunged into a funding crisis. Enviro laws on the chopping block. An emboldened, radical Ford Nation base. There’s so much at stake with a Ford-led majority — and with party campaigns kicking off, we need to get to work on ours.

After we heard that 93% of you want to work to prevent Ford from total power, we went away to map out dozens of ways we could do it.

We’ve surfaced with a powerful, hyper-strategic campaign that the Leadnow community was born to undertake: go after the worst, most divisive Conservative crusaders in their local battleground ridings, including Doug Ford.

It’s bold, and I’ve got to be honest — it’s going to get intense. We haven’t even launched yet, and already Ford’s base is attacking us on social media. If we go after Ford’s seat, there’s no telling what kind of things his base will do to drag us through the mud.

But if we can pull it off, we’ll not only flip key seats away from Conservatives and help prevent a Ford-led majority — we’ll draw a firm line against the politics of division and deceit that drag Ontario backwards.

So, if we’re going to do this, we need to know we’re in it together. Should we campaign to defeat Ford and the radical right in their local battleground ridings? [Click here to STOP FORD.]

Since we last checked-in, we’ve been crunching numbers, pouring over communications research, and talking to experts — all in service of finding the most strategic way for you to have impact in this election.

Here’s what we found:

1/ Some of the worst PC candidates — those who do the bidding of big business, spew bigotry and block progress on the most urgent issues of our time — are running in tight battleground ridings. This includes Ford’s own riding, and the homophobic Tanya Granic Allen’s.

2/ Polls show that while Ford Nation supporters are locked in their vote, there’s an unprecedented number of undecided and persuadable voters (upwards of 68%) — who might not be comfortable supporting an untrustworthy, divisive figure like Ford.  This is our opening. Through carefully-crafted local messaging, we can shave off votes for the PCs in these key ridings.

3/ Polling also suggests that progressives are very UNINSPIRED this election, meaning there’s a real risk that they don’t vote at all.  This would usher Ford straight to victory. But together we can be a line of defense against Ford’s blue wave — by making sure progressives flood the polls through a province-wide ‘get out the vote’ program.

In sum: the electoral math tells us we can have impact in the ridings where the most dangerous candidates are running. Our values tell us we have to draw a line in the sand against what these candidates stand for.

So are you in on this strategy? [Click here to STOP FORD.]

Make no mistake: this election will be hard, and there’s a lot stacked against us. But friend, I do believe that this is the time to be bold.

We’ve seen the scary stuff that happens when fake populists or far-right politicians gain total power — and we now we have the sophisticated research to be strategic about helping prevent it from happening.

Leadnow also has a history of winning powerful election campaigns that take on those who block progress on our shared values and the most pressing issues of our time.

You told us you wanted to campaign to prevent a Ford majority. Now we need to know if you’re in on this plan. Tell us: should we go after Ford and the radical right in local battleground ridings to draw a line against their values and help tip the scales of this election? [Click here to STOP FORD.]

With hope and respect,

Brittany, Logan, Tim, Rachel and Grace, on behalf of the Leadnow team

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Are you running a strategic voting campaign? — No we are not. We are trying to shave off swing votes for the local Conservative candidate in local battleground ridings, as well as drive progressives to the polls.
  2. Does talking about Ford help him win? — The short answer is no. But it also depends on who you are talking to. We aren’t trying to flip or speak to Ford’s base. We are targeting soft conservative voters and progressives. Research tells us that talking about Ford, his spin, and what’s at stake if he wins, is the best way to inspire those audiences to vote and not vote PC. It’s very true that communication in this election has to be super smart and data-proven in order to persuade target audiences. And that’s exactly what we’re planning to do.
  3. What ridings are you working in? — The Leadnow community is targeting a handful of Conservative candidates in battleground ridings we’ve identified as the biggest blockers of progress and those who insist on dragging our politics to the right. So far these include Doug Ford in Etobicoke North, and Tanya Granic-Allen in Mississauga Centre.
