Did Alberta Premier Rachel Notley’s BC Wine Boycott just backfire?

“Social media is going wild in support of B.C. vino,” says Dogwood citizen action network.

“Yesterday Alberta Premier Rachel Notley announced a boycott of B.C. wine in ‘retaliation’ for us standing strong against Kinder Morgan. I’m from wine country. I grew up in the Okanagan and now I live in Langley’s wine belt. For the Alberta premier to threaten small wine producers — on behalf of a Texas pipeline company — well, it makes me want to pour myself a generous glass of Syrah wine. Luckily, Notley’s wine war has already turned. Social media is going wild in support of B.C. vino. Post your #bcwine photo to join them. Or if you don’t drink, please forward this e-mail to a friend!”Lisa Sammartino, Dogwood

The above passage is the gist of an email I received today from Lisa. In support of Dogwood’s #bcwine photo campaign, this afternoon I hustled on over to my local Ontario liquor control outlet and bought a couple of bottles of BC red wine – Diabolica and Five Vineyards – then took this photo of my favourite gal toasting John Horgan for his courageous stand against Rachel Notley’s threatened court action and, now, her boycott of BC wines – all this in her support of a Texas pipeline company!

“Here’s to you, Premier Horgan.”

Please support Dogwood’s campaign.

Below is a copy of the full text of Lisa’s email, including a photo of herself.

It’s wine o’clock, email from Lisa Sammartino, Dogwood, February 7, 2018

Frank,

It’s time to uncork a bottle of B.C. wine!

Okay, maybe not this exact minute (and only if you drink and are of age). But the next time you’re at the liquor store, please consider supporting one of British Columbia’s many excellent wine producers, then post a photo on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter of you imbibing. Like this:

Use the hashtag #bcwine and any others you think are apropos. Some ideas: #grapesofwrath #ToastTheCoast #PinotNotPipelines

Why? Yesterday Alberta Premier Rachel Notley announced a boycott of B.C. wine in “retaliation” for us standing strong against Kinder Morgan.

Or if you don’t drink, please forward this e-mail to a friend!

Cheers,

Lisa Sammartino

P.S. We’re having fun with this, but Notley just made a huge mistake. The most famous wine boycott in history was against South Africa, to protest Apartheid. The Alberta premier revived the tactic to try to punish a province standing up for clean water, Indigenous rights and the climate. The world will not look kindly on this. If you don’t drink, or you don’t use social media, please forward this e-mail to a few friends who do. Thank you!
