Life and Death in Palestine: Information gift for a Premier — Day 13

Israeli soldier who executed wounded Palestinian gets hero’s welcome and calls for his release.

As a reminder, scholar and educator Herbert Thelen inspired this protest project: “To act ignorantly when knowledge is available, to deny realities that patently exist and make a genuine difference, is the worst crime of civilized man.”

Israel’s crimes against Palestinians in the Occupied Territories are realities that patently exist. Why, then, when this knowledge is readily available, would Premier Wynne decide to lead a trade mission to Israel? I suggest this was not a responsibly informed decision. Quite the contrary, it legitimizes, rather than challenges, seven decades of Israel’s crimes against Palestinians in the Occupied Territories.

Today, Day 13 of my letter-a-day, 19-day campaign to share with the Premier information gifts from alternative online news sources not readily found in North America’s mainstream news media, I sent the following message.

Although I conclude all my emails welcoming a reply, to date, not one has been forthcoming.

Dear Premier Wynne,

Below is my information gift for you on this, Day 13, of my intended 19-day project to fill in some possible gaps in your knowledge base with respect to life and death in the Israeli Occupied Territories.

Today’s article was published by Mondoweiss, an independent US-based website devoted to informing readers about developments in Israel/Palestine and related US foreign policy, news and analysis unavailable through the mainstream media regarding the struggle for Palestinian human rights. Co-editor, Philip Weiss, describes himself as an anti-Zionist Jewish American.

Introduction to today’s information gift –

Amid an atmosphere that was overtly celebratory, the mood became somber at times, as if [the soldier] Azarya was a martyr or had been captured by a rival armed group. But his captors were his own government, and the people demanded his release. Onstage, Elor Azarya’s mother wrote on her Facebook page to kill Palestinian mothers and children. His father chanted “We will not let anyone wipe us out! The Jewish people live! The Jewish people live!” The crowd chanted back: “We will win and we will fuck the Arabs!”

Reposted below is a selected segment from the beginning of the article. To read the complete piece and access photos and video clips from the event. click on the following linked title.

Elor Azarya, King of Israel  by Dan Cohen, Mondoweiss, May 4, 2016

Elor Azaya

The episode since Israeli medic-soldier and French citizen Elor Azarya was filmed summarily executing Abd Al-Fattah Al-Sharif has been a sobering reminder of the Israeli right-wing’s total and long-standing dominance over the Zionist left, manifesting into a display unseen since the last war on Gaza, when anti-war protesters were beaten in the streets.

On March 24, Azarya was caught on film summarily executing a wounded, incapacitated Palestinian man as he lay on the ground in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron.

As the video went viral, the Israeli public rallied around Azarya. A petition for his release gained 50,000 signatures in a few days, and a poll revealed that 82% of Israelis support the execution. Across the country, Israelis held public events including town halls and streets demonstrations, culminating with a rally for Azarya in Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square on April 19 that drew what I estimate to be at least 5,000 supporters. From the stage, the square was full as far as the eye could see.

Amid an atmosphere that was overtly celebratory, the mood became somber at times, as if Azarya was a martyr or had been captured by a rival armed group. But his captors were his own government, and the people demanded his release.

Onstage, Elor’s mother, Oshra Azarya, who called to kill Palestinian mothers and children on Facebook, broke down when she spoke of her son’s “angel eyes.”

For his part, Charlie Azarya, the soldier’s father, couldn’t muster much beyond nationalistic statements and chants. “We are a strong people! We will not let anyone wipe us out! The Jewish people live! The Jewish people live!”

“We will win and we will fuck the Arabs! Ole ole ole!” the crowd chanted back.

The celebration was a release of the anger from the betrayal they felt from politicians across the board who explicitly instructed soldiers, police and civilians to shoot-to-kill on-the-spot – exactly what Azarya had done.

As the event concluded, around 80 Israeli men and boys of army age, some wearing Israeli flags as capes, rose from one knee and jumped while chanting: “Elor, HaMelech Yisrael! Chai chai, vekayam!” (Elor, the King of Israel lives!)

Response to my emails are always welcome.

Kindest regards,

Frank White, etc.
