“It’s one thing for the NDP to say they don’t want to raise the red flag of Palestinian human rights during the election. After all, foreign affairs is not exactly one of the bread and butter issues politicians speak about on the hustings. But as a Nova Scotian, it shocked me that the NDP demanded the resignation of their Nova Scotia candidate Morgan Wheeldon, after the Conservative Party smeared him for daring to criticize Israel’s brutality against the Palestinians.” —Judy Haven, IJV Canada
So reads the opening lines of an email from Judy Haven of Independent Jewish Voices Canada. Below is the rest of the message. Please read it. Then take action:
For background details, see yesterday’s post: NDP caves to smear campaign against Nova Scotia candidate’s anti-Israel comments, accepts his resignation
On a personal note, in my call to the NDP, if I get to talk to a real live person and not a machine, I will request that Wheeldon’s forced resignation be overruled and that he be reappointed as a candidate – presuming of course that he would accept the offer.
It’s one thing for the NDP to say they don’t want to raise the red flag of Palestinian human rights during the election. After all, foreign affairs is not exactly one of the bread and butter issues politicians speak about on the hustings.
But as a Nova Scotian, it shocked me that the NDP demanded the resignation of their Nova Scotia candidate Morgan Wheeldon, after the Conservative Party smeared him for daring to criticize Israel’s brutality against the Palestinians.
Morgan Wheeldon was first smeared by the Conservatives, then thrown under the bus by the NDP.
Join me and IJV Canada in demanding that the NDP distance itself from the smear tactics of the Conservatives and the Israel lobby, who aim to silence criticism of Israel’s human rights violations against Palestinians.
IJV supports the grassroots Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement to end Canadian corporations’, universities’ and government support of Israel’s occupation and siege of the Palestinian people.
In August 2014, when Israel killed more than 2,000 Palestinians, including over 500 children, in its 51 day war on Gaza, Wheeldon (like thousands of other Canadians) called Israel’s actions against the Palestinians a war crime. Wheeldon also suggested that Israel has a long history of ethnically cleansing the Palestinians, which is entirely accurate.
Independent Jewish Voices – Canada believes Wheeldon was speaking truth to power. The Conservatives and the Israel lobby want to stop any criticism of Israel and its illegal and violent military occupation over the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza. They want to deflect attention from Israeli-Canadian policing and trade agreements that implicate Canadians in this illegal occupation. So why is the NDP dancing to their tune?
If the NDP is allowed to betray Palestinians and rights activists, and then get elected, we wonder about their commitment to striking down the Anti-Terrorism Act (formerly called Bill C-51), and their determination to uphold international human rights.
Join me in telling the NDP that it should be promoting candidates who speak the truth about Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, rather than joining with the Conservatives and the Israel lobby who seek to silence such legitimate criticism. Call the NDP at 1-866-525-2555.

Dear NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, Foreign Affairs Critic Paul Dewar,
I am deeply disturbed by the recent move by the NDP to force the resignation of NDP candidate Morgan Wheeldon. Mr. Wheeldon was publicly smeared by the Conservative party and Canada’s Israel lobby for speaking the truth about Israel’s mistreatment of the Palestinians, through Israel’s decades-long, ongoing project of expelling the native inhabitants from their lands, and demolishing their homes. In other words, the forced removal of one ethnic group to make way for another, or ethnic cleansing.
We see this as fitting into an unsettling pattern, with Jerry Natanine being pressured by NDP headquarters not to run after voicing support for Palestinians, and Paul Manly losing this nomination last year due to his criticisms of Israel’s behaviour.
The fact that Canada’s progressive party shows an unwillingness to even discuss openly the reality on the ground for Palestinians is both morally reprehensible, and contrary to the openness and progressiveness that the NDP claims to represent.
I understand that the Israel lobby in Canada fiercely attacks anyone who dares criticize Israel’s ongoing colonization, but this does not excuse the NDP’s behaviour with regard to its candidates and their completely legitimate and valid opinions regarding this foreign policy issue.
I call on the NDP to refrain from stooping to the level of the Conservatives and the Liberal Party in their blind allegiance to Israel and its bullying lobby groups, and to take a strong stand in support of freedom of speech on this issue. Obeying the unethical demands of the Israel lobby will not win the NDP votes among progressives in Canada.
