“And there is no military in the history of the world that has actually used such precision targets. I mean, think about it from a military tactics point of view. We tell our enemies—we tell Hamas where we’re going to hit. We tell them with text messages, with phone calls, with leaflets. We tell them in order to get civilians out of harm’s way. But for them, civilian death is actually—it’s actually a success. This is what they want.”—Joshua Hantman, senior advisor to Israel’s ambassador to the US
Hantman’s foregoing remark was made during his appearance yesterday on Democracy Now. The broadcast featured a debate between Palestinian human rights attorney Noura Erakat and Hantman concerning the latest outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas. Democracy Now, July 11, 2014
Meanwhile, in Gaza, another story was unfolding. By some cruel twist of fate Hantman’s callous remark has, for me at least, become indelibly linked with the killing of a little boy by IDF forces.
The heartbreaking video, embedded below, of a Palestinian father wailing over his dead child, imploring him to wake up and see the toy he got him, should serve as a deserving graphic slap in the face to Mr. Hantman for his cold indifference to Palestinian suffering –
But perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised by Hantman’s insensitivity towards Palestinian suffering under the iron heel of IDF savagery, for as Gideon Levy put it in a July 7, Haaretz column — “Now we know: In the Jewish state, there is pity and humane feelings only for Jews, rights only for the Chosen People.”
Please do not watch this heartbreaking 41-second video if, as Mondoweiss news put it –
“…if you don’t wish to know what horrific violence is being visited on Palestinian families with the support of the U.S. government. Don’t open it if you don’t wish to have scarred into your mind the devotion and nurturing and wild grief of a Palestinian father.”

UPDATE July 13, 2014
“Wake Up My Son!” None of Gaza’s Murdered Children Are Just Numbers by Ali Abunimah, Electronicintifada.net, July 13, 2014 — Sahir Salman Abu Namous was just four years old, soon to turn five. Sahir was killed on Friday afternoon when an Israeli warplane bombed his family home in the Tal al-Zaatar neighborhood in northern Gaza. “He was playing and smiling next to his mother when missile shrapnel divided his head,” his cousin, Diaa Mahmoud, writes.
