With eyes wide shut, PM Harper gives nod of support to Israel’s murderous “right to defend itself” against terror attacks

Meanwhile, a very different perspective on terror in Gaza is provided by a progressive Jewish news website

First, this short excerpt from a Canadian Press story —

Harper Confirms Canada’s Support for Israel Amid Ongoing Tensions, updated July 11, 2014 –

“Prime Minister Stephen Harper reiterated Canada’s support for Israel Wednesday in a conversation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu…The Prime Minister’s Office says Netanyahu updated Harper on the situation in Israel, including steps taken to defend itself against attacks by Hamas….The PMO says Harper reiterated Canada’s steadfast support for Israel and its right to defend itself against terror attacks. Both leaders agreed that Hamas must end its targeted attacks on Israeli citizens.”

Next, speaking of terror attacks —

Here’s a report from today’s Mondoweiss news website, devoted to covering American foreign policy in the Middle East, chiefly from a progressive Jewish perspective —

Terror in Gaza: 57 seconds after ‘warning,’ Israel destroys a house, by Philip Weiss, July 11, 2014.

Here’s the lead in to that story –

“Israel claims it is warning civilians about missile strikes by ‘roof knocking’. Israeli army spokesperson Lt. Col. Peter Lerner made that claim to a credulous Wolf Blitzer last night on CNN. ‘We tap harmlessly on roofs’, he said, ‘so the residents can leave.’ ” [See below for a possible source and excerpt of this exchange between Blitzer and Lerner].

Max Blumenthal just tweeted the [following comment and] video —

“See how Israel “warns” Gazans it is going to bomb their homes and imagine the terror.”

So, who are the terrorists?

Exchange between Blitzer and Lerner

THE SITUATION ROOM:Crisis in Israel, CNN, Aired July 10, 2014

BLITZER: But, Colonel, you know a lot of innocent Palestinians, including women, children, elderly are being killed?

LERNER: The situation is grave indeed.

I would say primarily the IDF uses weapons to safeguard its civilians. Hamas uses its civilians to safeguard their weapons. It’s a grave situation. We are operating in a professional way. I would also add, the IDF is the only military that calls up its enemies and tells them, please evacuate the premises of your command-and-control office, leave the room, we are intending to attack.

We then send a non-explosive projectile, knock the roof and make sure they leave. Only after we have visual confirmation that they have left, only then do we carry out the strike. We go to great extent to try and minimize the civilian casualties. The other side, what do they do? They encourage the population to go on the roofs and then they start shooting the rockets from the alleyways of the cities, of the towns.

  • Note the title: “Crisis in Israel” — How’s that for biased wording? And Lerner’s misinformation that “The other side, what do they do? They encourage the population to go on the roofs and then they start shooting the rockets from the alleyways of the cities, of the towns.” In fact, Palestinians go on to the roofs to show there are civilians living here in the hope that the IDF will not destroy the building. And, as in past conflicts, Israelis make the false accusation that Hamas is using civilians, particularly children, as human shields. In fact, just the opposite is true — it is Israeli soldiers who have used Palestinian children as shields (Source: Electronic Intifada, search statement “children as shield
