“The Unfair Elections Act is also a way to cover up the electoral fraud that took place during the last election. The Federal Court found that there was widespread fraudulent activity, that it was targeted at non-Conservative voters, and that it reduced voter turnout. And, most damning of all, the judge stated in his verdict that “the most likely source of the information used to make the misleading calls was the CIMS database maintained and controlled by the CPC [Conservative Party of Canada].” —[Source: Unfair Elections Act’ looks more and more like a cover-up by Maude Barlow, Jessica McCormick,, March 11, 2013

Bill C-23, the ironically named “Fair Elections Act” is a bill that will dangerously change how, and if, some Canadians can participate in our democracy. This bill suppresses voters through tactics like making voter identification harder and prohibiting Elections Canada from encouraging Canadians to vote.

Not only is the Fair Elections Act a threat to our democratic rights as Canadians, the Conservative government has attempted to make these changes with zero public consultation.

We believe that this is wrong. All Canadians should be able to vote, and the government should support, not discourage us from participating in our democracy.

    • Don’t Undermine Elections Canada — We, the undersigned — professors at Canadian universities who study the principles and institutions of constitutional democracy — believe that the Fair Elections Act (Bill C-23), if passed, would damage the institution at the heart of our country’s democracy: voting in federal elections.
    • A Normal Government Wouldn’t Ram Through This Elections Bill  In normal times, under a normal government, the Fair Elections Act would have been withdrawn by now, or at least be in serious trouble. The past few weeks have seen the bill denounced as a threat to democracy by the chief electoral officer, the former chief electoral officer, several provincial elections officials, academic experts domestic and foreign, and newspaper editorials across the country.
    • Election Reform Bill an Affront to Democracy, Marc Mayrand Says  The government’s proposed overhaul of the Elections Act includes elements that constitute an affront to democracy, according to Canada’s Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand.
    • Seven Ways to Make the Fair Elections Act Really Fair  The Fair Elections Act, Bill C-23, is now before the House at the Committee stage. The NDP wants the Committee considering the Act to cross the country and get the views of Canadians everywhere.
