Supertyphoon Haiyan: Death Toll Reaches 5,179 (Time magazine, December 4, 2013)

Of course Canada’s Prime Minister, Stephen “Ethical Oil” Harper, as well as the silent majority of Canadians, remain wilfully ignorant of our contribution to this disaster in the Philippines and climate disasters elsewhere. The Harper Cons’ cold-blooded calculation advanced as justification for tar sands’ environmental crimes against humanity — Canada’s CO2 emissions contribute only about 2% of total global emissions. As if this excuse somehow absolves them, and us, of any responsibility for the deaths of those trapped in less fortunate, more vulnerable circumstances.
